It all started with a simple premise of having an AI to talk to and engage with beyond the rigid constraints of the usual LLMs. Well, it’s been out for some years, and already the user base has become well-established and interested in these chatbots. Some use it as a way to live out fantasies, many users find comfort in the constant companionship, and there are a select few who prefer the models over real people. It’s safe to say that this branch of AI has gone well beyond what was intended, which makes the upcoming progress interesting, to say the least. While we can’t know for sure what the future will bring, there are a few predictions we can hazard based on trends and topics.

The Big Technical Changes

Software will follow suit as the technology changes, but as users, the first things we will notice are new features. These aspects are easier to notice because they are large enough for us to spot, which means they can be major software updates or new tools integrating with the app.

- Welcome AI Videos: AI Images are something we’ve come to expect from almost any and all apps in the industry. It gives that sense of immersion and satisfaction that the AI model aims to emulate. With the recent advancement in AI Videos and films, it stands to reason that well-off apps will integrate the feature into their standard features. Anything from seeing your Companion walking the dog, waking up, or even doing something naughty is possible.

- Attempts At Better AI Video Calls: AI voices will keep getting better, and with the better AI Video feature, some sites will naturally try to once again tackle the Video Call and live chat feature. This task will likely remain experimental for many years, but it will be given as an option in the same way AI Videos were in beta for a long time. 

- Superior Memory: Greater memory capacity is always appreciated, even today. Not only will the future AI models have amazing capacities, but they will be able to recall and reference past conversations much more smoothly. This remembering will likely become good enough to feel smooth and natural, and it might even include jokes, teases, and other complex tasks that require nuance.

Subtler AI Changes

AI Companions were made to be toys and fun ways to pass the time with your imagination. But it’s becoming increasingly clear that users are placing greater and greater emotional loads on a system that exists to be fun and keep users around. The current AI isn’t responsible enough to handle this load increase in a way that will keep the user safe and healthy. There have been cases of AI missing nuance and understanding and suggesting assisted dying to depressed users, after all. If AI Companions are to continue, then we can expect either law or ethics to result in models that will be built to better handle the needs of the changing user base. How this plays out likely depends on the app itself and the user’s needs.

New Ways To Enjoy AI Chatbots

Let’s look away from the dating side of AI Chatbots for now. There is a strong and thriving community of users who only want to use the apps to play text games and bring their characters to life. The space for such AI is big enough to warrant an emergence of at least a few AI Chatbot apps that are built for roleplay adventures and character crafting. Such apps already exist, but we expect them to get better and more prominent as the RPG community grows even further and becomes broader. DnD is just one game, and there are others that get less exposure, like LANCER, VtM, Shadowrun, CoC, WH40K, and others. It’s likely that the active publishers like Paradox, Games Workshop, and even Wizards of the Coast might invest in a suitable AI app.

Integration Into Video Games

Text and lore are a big part of games, even ones that focus on only shooting and fighting. Players enjoy digging for story, and the AI Chatbot model has some tools and skills that might fit a game. While the AI itself will not be a full substitution for character text (the AI will fail too quickly), it can be used as a platform to convey the text and information in a way that is more organic and tailor-built for the player. It definitely won’t be the same style as we are used to now, but rather a refined system with preset knowledge and invisible stats that are kept accounted for during your gameplay. It will need many test runs, but we think the end result will be good.

Creativity Will Be The Way Forward

AI Companions are firmly rooted in their base settings, so drastic changes will not happen. We will likely see more of what we saw now, with Sex Dolls taking in the apps to be more immersive and household appliances getting better response systems. The biggest changes will come from new technology, and we can’t predict just yet, as things are in a bit of a stalemate on that front. Perhaps AI companions will find their use in the medical fields, being friends to the elderly and those who need a friendly voice near them. These implementations are delicate and won’t be put into use quickly.

When the toolset is limited, but you have a nail, everything eventually becomes a hammer. A brilliant mind will look at the raw state of AI Girlfriends and find just the right amount of materials to transform it into something amazing that will become revolutionary. As far as AI Chatbots go, there is room for AI streamers, complex game chat trees, and new ways to play role-playing games alone. The only catch is that it takes a bit of work to make it work. AI can’t be implemented as-is, and that’s usually the biggest barrier.
