We cannot, in good conscience, claim that AI is capable enough to serve professionally capable tools for taking care of those in need. However, we can imagine a world where AI companions have found their niche in these fields, serving as a soft shoulder to rely on and take care of those in greatest need.

Communication is something all people crave, but it's also something that is often ignored and made scarce, especially for those who are in their sunset years. On the other side of the spectrum are children who are so curious to learn and discover the world around them that their daily lives become filled with adventure. In both cases, an AI companion could potentially find a place in daily life, serving as a much-needed friend. 

The Retirement Homes Are Lonely

When people get old and are sent to the elderly houses, what often follows them is the fact that they become progressively more lonely. It's no secret that staff in these homes often underdelivers a needed amount of conversation and attention a resident might need. This issue has become so widely known that several events and groups have formed to encourage younger folk to visit the elderly in these care facilities and keep them company. The old folks appreciate the visits and someone helping them out. Human presence is invaluable to these people, but sadly, humans are in low supply, and some care homes are strict when it comes to who can visit. It is settings like these that AI companions were made for since their endless patience and eagerness are perfect for older folks who might have a lot to say.

- Just An Electronic Ear: The simplest implementation of AI companions is to have them act as conversation partners. AI like these will need a good memory bank to keep track of everything that is being said and make the conversation tangible. But at the end of the day, AI will do what it does best - listen. Already, we can find some software that can reply with lively verses that uplift the spirit, and some even have realistic voices to boot. With some training, an AI companion could hold conversations with multiple people at once, enriching daily life. Companions like this could serve as a more personable ALEXA or SIRI, allowing residents to search for information or learn new things.

 
- Friendly Familiar: If we combine robotics with AI, we reach what is essentially a small companion "animal" or a friendly creature. Such models could be pure cuteness, like the adorable Aibi and Emo, but they could also be soft, like the many similar robots. They would provide much-needed physical affection, but the speech aspect need not be integrated to be effective. However, these little robots could serve as active monitors for their human partners, calculating when the next batch of medicine is arriving or whether or not their friend is in need of assistance. Since these machines are not alive, the residents would not need to fear losing them to illness and neglect, while the nurses would appreciate the hygienic aspect.

Children Enjoy New Things

Children are fickle, and their attention spans are subject to the laws of nature. But what everyone knows is that all young humans love learning new things. This might sound strange, considering how schools have become a symbol of child woes, but it wasn't always like this. Namely, the format which schooling takes notoriously has a bad habit of staunching child curiosity.

Thinking about the subject is not as important as not failing, so all kids will veer in the direction of becoming compliant students. The way young humans learn new things could use something new in the equation, so maybe the versatile and adaptable AI companions could find a place here. Being able to adapt and personalize itself to every child's needs and answer and discuss all manners of questions - AI companionship already has a promising standing. 

- Another Tool For Teachers: Teachers can never get enough teaching tools to help their students learn and understand the subject, and introducing an AI companion type of software into the learning system could prove fruitful. Not only can the AI simulate a real person, but it could act as advanced professional software and directly compare student ideas to results. For example, in engineering the AI can calculate the formula the student had given and translate it into text that isn't just a bunch of numbers but information from which the student can learn. Similarly, in language study, the AI can act as part of a native speaker.

 
- Personal Tutor: AI companions are exceptionally well-versed in learning about their users, their weaknesses, doubts, and even aspirations. But more importantly they are very good at understanding and formulating text. Using AI this way, students could easily develop a tutor who could change the way they study and consume knowledge in a way that best fits their capabilities. The AI would be able to express information in the most understandable way and correct any errors it detects.

A Slice Of Future Today

Some of our ideas can already be implemented today, but the effectiveness and results might vary. The technology still needs polishing, not to mention how much external configuration will need to take place to make everything tick like a well-oiled machine. Robot companions already exist, and the technology behind them will prove to be a good basis for any changes and modifications of a better AI code.

AI companions are a kind of software that represents a seed from the future that will soon blossom into something great. The AI can be our great friend and companion, but we will need to take everything carefully and consider any potential problems in advance. Until then, we can enjoy thinking about the future that could be and how our world could become a much better place for everyone who enjoys the warm sunshine of hope.
